Extra help using Manual Lymphatic Drainage following Liposuction, or Vaser Liposuction

When Oedema strikes after Liposuction or Vaser Liposuction

Thankfully, for most people, the after effects of liposuction and Vaser liposuction are usually mild, but some people have complications with lumpiness, swelling, or bruising, which can be admirably dealt with using a short course of manual lymphatic drainage treatments.
Get help now: If you still have swelling or lumpiness after your surgery, ask your consultant about using manual lymph drainage in the final sculpting process, to help things settle down smoothly after your surgery. The number to call to book your appointment at The Haven Healing Centre, can be found below. I look forward to seeing you soon. Phil

Woman Having Liposuction (Wikimedia Commons, GNU Free Documentation License) All forms of cosmetic surgery, including liposuction, come with possible side effects. The most common liposuction risks are scaring, bruises or swelling.

What areas are normally treated with Liposuction?
Liposuction and the more recent Vaser Lipo can tackle many problem areas such as; abdomen, love handles, arms, back, hips, inner thighs, outer thighs, buttocks, knees, calves, female breasts, male breasts, face, chin and neck areas.

Is Liposuction a safe procedure?
Yes, liposuction is considered to be a safe procedure. Worldwide, thousands of liposuction and Vaser Lipo procedures are performed each year without any reported serious problems or side effects.

So what should I do if I'm one of the unlucky ones who has a problem after my surgery?
Ask your surgeon to explain how these possible risks could apply to you. Side-effects of liposuction may include:
  • A dull, or not so dull ache, sometimes for extended periods
  • Bruising – this can be painful and can sometimes take more than a month to clear
  • Infection - this will need monitoring regularly
  • Lumpiness - unevenness or areas of skin irregularity in the contours of the body can take several months to even out
  • Bleeding - not normally blood, but blood stained liquid, if the skin port holes are left open to drain
  • Swelling – this may not completely settle for up to 4-6 months
  • Dimpling - skin dimpling occurs because of the fat removed from that area, skin might have a lumpy appearance
  • Numbness – this may last for several months
  • Other sensations - including itching, pulling, pinching, hardness or tightness
  • Scars – typically 1 to 2 cm long
  • Swollen ankles

Why would I get swollen ankles if I have liposuction in my abdomen?
Because the lymph in your legs has to pass by the abdomen on it's way to the thoracic duct, which is the main drain for your lymph. Any disruption in the lymphatic vessels can have a knock on effect distally to the area of surgery. While you are resting during the recovery phase, and not very active post-surgery, lymph drainage can become a little sluggish, because it relies on movement to pump it around the body. Consequently your ankles, legs and knees may collect excess lymph, which can stagnate and become a little harder to remove than normal. There can be a similar response following a mastectomy. When lymph nodes in the pectoral and axillary areas are removed, the disruption can have a knock on effect in the arm and hand.

What is the answer to these problems? Is there one?
Time is the easy answer. Most of these issues will resolve with time. Those that don't may need a little encouragement, to do the things that nature is not, or cannot, do for itself. For that we resort to the very gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage.

Modern cosmetic surgery procedures are becoming far less invasive to the person, with improved results, and faster recovery times. All this is good news for the consumer, or those in medical need. But for some patients, the possibility of considerable swelling following the liposuction is inevitable. And this swelling, as well as lumpiness might not vanish for some months. If this applies to you, 7, 8, 9 weeks post surgery, then make sure your surgeon knows and ask their advice. They will most likely tell you to look for someone like me to speed things along.

Woman Measuring Her Waist I like to think of it as more than 'speeding things along', but more like bringing the body back into balance. However, simple and routine this procedure is, it is a huge disruption to the body, which, following the shock factor alone, must be given the time and facility to heal.

Following your surgery you will usually be fitted with an elasticated support garment. This will help to reduce swelling and improve your body shape. They can become unbelievably uncomfortable when worn for extended periods (such as around the abdomen), but they are designed to help control the swelling local to your surgery.

You will usually be given a date for a follow-up appointment. Make sure you bring up any problems at these meetings. Make notes beforehand so you don't forget to ask your relevant questions, and keeping a note journal will also help you cope with your feelings and side effects. Remember, you may not get the result you had hoped for straight way. Your Manual Lymph Drainage Treatment will help you achieve your goals, but it may take several months before the big changes occur and your body settles down to show off the new you.

My message to you is this: If you are at all concerned about the side effects of your recent liposuction or Vaser liposuction, or if your recovery is taking longer than you expected, speak to your surgeon or consultant about manual lymphatic drainage, perhaps show them this page. Gain their blessing before doing anything different, but once you get the go ahead, don't wait, pick up the phone! The sooner we start treatments, the sooner you are likely to see improvement in your condition. If you live in any of the towns and villages in the list below, you are well within a 2-40 minute drive of The Haven Healing Centre, and I'd be delighted to help you.
