Thermal Auricular Therapy - Ear Candling

Balance the emotions and improve general health and wellbeing

Thermal Auricular Therapy Fancy having your ears done?
Some people find the soothing relaxation of ear candling one of the most gentle ways to pamper themselves than just about anything else they can say, do, or even think of. The rest of us, of course, would rather spend a fortnight in the Palm Hotel, in Dubai. smile
But I can assure you that candling is very therapeutic and calming to a stressed mind and body, even in our lovely UK.

So what are the benefits of Thermal Auricular Therapy?
Ear candling is a very gentle, beneficial, non-invasive, pleasant, relaxing, therapeutic and painless therapy which calms the mind and soothes the head and ears. See, I told you, just like the spa at the Palm hotel, no doubt.

Of course, if you really are flying off to some exotic land and you have painful ears on flights, maybe this could help reduce the effects of take off and landing prior to the trip.

I have given ear candling to many people with tinnitus, labrynthitis, BPPV, sinusitus, rhinitus, temporal mandibular joint dysfunction, sore eyes, blocked ears, those with ear pressure problems, the stressed, the anxious and the worried.

They all say the same thing; "I wish I'd come and seen you ages ago!" Or, something equally profound like; "I can't believe how relaxed and calm I feel" and "Why can't we have this on the NHS?". Well, actually I know the answer to the last one; because the hospitals would be even more overrun than they are now. But that's another story.

So, if I have any of the list above, I could come for treatment?
Yes, of course. But not only that, there are many other conditions that may benefit from ear candling. Here are a few:

  • Lets recap on the above:
  • Tinnitus
  • Labrynthitis and BPPV
  • Sinusitus
  • Rhinitus
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ, TMD or TMJD)
  • Sore eyes
  • Blocked ears
  • Ear pressure problems
  • The stressed
  • The anxious
  • The worried
  • How about any of these:
  • Motion Sickness/Air Sickness
  • Cerebral coordination
  • Excessive ear wax
  • Fluid balance issues
  • Hayfever
  • Irritations in the ear (dryness, itchyness, eczema)
  • Migraine
  • Pressure regulation (following flying or diving)
  • Work environment (noise pollution, sudden loud bangs
  • Or these:
  • Vertigo
  • General ENT issues
  • Glue ear
  • Headaches
  • Menieres
  • Mucus related conditions
  • Facial muscle relaxation
  • General relaxation
  • Stimulation of the circulation (blood flow and lymph)
  • Lymph drainage
  • Face pain

It sounds really bizarre to put burning candles in your ears. Where did this idea come from?
I couldn't agree more! When I first heard of it, I thought, this is a joke right? But that was before I tried it, and even longer before I started treating people with this therapy. What I discovered was that people were improving their hearing; if not forever, for a significant time. They might have had pain that would subside, almost always without medication. In some patients, sinus congestion would clear up and perhaps more interestingly, their sense of taste would return.

Why would a blocked ear cause your food to become tastless? I don't actually think it does. I think this type of thing stems from a jaw dysfunction which leads to tightness in the jaw muscles, which also affects the ears. Chewing, along with muscle tension in the jaw has an effect on the parotid gland (your salivary gland), which has an effect on taste, but more about that later.

What should I expect from an Ear Candling treatment at The Haven Healing Centre?
This very conveniently leads me to talk about what will happen when you come. Because if you just want ear candling, I have plenty of collegues who will do you just ear candling, and very nice it will be too.

If you come here for candling, I will do rather more than that. You see, I see candling as part of an overall health package. The ear is an incredibly robust piece of kit. Just think of how it gets treated on a rugby field or a boxing ring. And yet, the inner chambers are delicate and easily disturbed, causing dysfunction, or can even be damaged, which can cause deafness. You wouldn't dream of sticking sharp or pointy objects in your ears, because you know of the potential for damage in there. So we should treat our ears with a high degree of respect and care.

You most likely will have an ear related disturbance, which will, more often than not, have something to do with the surrounding structures and organs. Let me explain.

You have pre and post auricular lymph nodes, that collect lymph, debris and proteins from the sides of the head, scalp, ear, jaw and neck. If you have muscle tension in the jaw or around the neck and side of the head, then it is also likely, your lymph processing will be disrupted or slowed.

Remember because of your skull, which has a small hole for the ear apparatus to pass through, the rest of the tissue and structures have to sit in the rather thin area between your skull and skin surface. This leaves precious room for everything there to do it's job efficiently.

Now bring jaw tension or jaw tightness into the equation, and you have a trigger for the build up of auricular dysfunction, either through multiple symptoms, or prolonged pain and dysfunction, including the build up of residues that would otherwise have long been disposed of.

Congestion and tightness may cause your parotid glands to produce less saliva, thus the reduction in taste. Your temperal muscles can cause eye pain and blurred vision or headache, which refers back to the jaw and ear area.

A dry mouth increases the bacterial content of the back of the throat leaving you with a greater potential for infection and sore throat. Where is your Eustachian tube in all this? At the back of the mouth, right where you get a sore throat. What happens if the Eustachian tube becomes clogged or infected? It can affect the ear, because the Eustachian tube goes from the back of the throat straight to the middle ear.

So what will your treatment include besides the physical act of ear candling?
Once we've done the preliminaries, the actual treatment will depend on your symptoms. The ear candling part is standard, but either before or after, will include remedial actions and techniques that will be tailored to your particular condition and symptoms.

This may include gentle facial massage for tight facial muscles such as in the forehead or temples, bio-stress release techniques for tight muscles, or misalignment around the jaw, or the muscles that go from the mastoid below the ear to the shoulder. We may need to treat several areas with acupressure techniques, or neuro-muscular therapy techniques. You may have areas of inflammation or oedema for which we will use lymphatic drainage techniques.

Your treatment will be tailored to exactly fit your list of symptoms. This will ensure that we have the best possible chance to improve your symptoms and condition, either at the time, or shortly thereafter. Come and enjoy the peaceful and therapeutic experience of Thermal Auricular Therapy.

The point is, treating one thing, may not get to the root of the problem. And, if I'm known for anything around here, it's thoroughness! So you can book your treatment with the confidence that together, with your guidance and feedback, we will do everything we can to find the cause of the problem and effect a satisfactory solution. I wish you good health and happy candling!

I don't know much about ear candling, can you give me anymore information?
Well, it seems that ear candling has been around in various forms for thousands of years, but nobody really knows who first started using them. Sometimes they are called Hopi ear candles, because it was believed they originated with the Hopi Indians in North America. But the Hopi Indians are at great pains to refute that claim, which is why the name is gradually being dropped in favour of just ear candling, or Thermal Auricular Therapy.

The candles are around 8-10" long, made of cotton, rolled in beeswax, dipped in honey extracts and infused with herbs such as sage, St.John's wort and camomile.

They have a safety filter fitted inside and a red line beyond which you should not burn the candle. This ensures you get the best relaxation effect, with a sensation of warmth in the ear, and a soft crackling and popping sound can be heard as the candle is burning down.

You are fully clothed during the treatment, removing only coats and shoes for comfort, and lying on your side on the treatment couch. Any other questions? Please email me (link below).
